What we see on these streets

A hill, a forest and a lot of 1970s brick

The driveways are the safety issue

A sloped concrete driveway with a film of moss and algae on it is genuinely dangerous when wet, and Brisbane summer storms make it wet a lot. On the steeper streets off the mountain this is the most common reason people call, and one of the few cleaning jobs we would describe as maintenance rather than cosmetics. A clean driveway grips.

The bushland is the gutter issue

Toohey Forest and the Mount Gravatt reserve mean eucalypt leaf drop all year, not just in autumn. Gum leaves pack into a dense mat water cannot get through, and a blocked gutter on a sloped block does not overflow harmlessly: it dumps concentrated run-off against the house and down the wall.

The aspect is the mould issue

Houses on the southern and south-eastern slopes sit in the mountain's shadow for part of the day. Those walls and roofs stay damp for hours longer than the same house two streets north, and grow mould accordingly. If one side of your house is visibly worse, that is almost always why.

Most housing is 1960s to 1980s brick and tile, with high-set homes and built-under extensions. Newer roofs across Upper Mount Gravatt often carry solar panels, worth cleaning at the same visit as the roof.

What comes off, and what a year of gum leaves looks like

Most people think their driveway is grey. It is usually a good deal lighter under the algae.

Local questions

Asked often around Mount Gravatt

Still unsure? Send a photo or call 0490 791 059.

My driveway is slippery when it rains. Will cleaning fix that?

Yes. The slipperiness is a living film of algae on the surface; remove it and the concrete grips again. It will come back eventually, so expect to redo a shaded slope every year or two.

How often should gutters be done near the forest?

More often than the Brisbane average. Once a year minimum with eucalypts overhead, ideally heading into storm season, and twice a year if trees hang directly over the roof line.

Can you get gear up a steep driveway?

Yes, steep is normal here. On the worst ones we park at the bottom and run hose rather than risk the trailer on the slope.

One side of my house is much worse than the other. Why?

Aspect. The shaded side dries slowly and mould thrives. It is not a defect in your render or paint and does not mean you need repainting: a soft wash usually brings it back.
